The Sheba Institute of Hemato-Oncology was founded in 1953 by Professor Braha Ramot, the laureate of the Israel Award in the sphere of medicine. Today this institute is the largest facility of its kind in all of Israel. The Institute offers a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and treatment of blood diseases, especially hematologic cancer. To provide fast diagnostics the Institute utilizes a wide variety of methods, such as Cytogenetic Analysis, Cytological Hybridization, Flow Cytometry and the PCR Method. These methods allow for accurate hematologic cancer diagnostics, the monitoring of the organism’s reaction to the treatment, and residual symptoms control in accordance with modern cancer treatment. The Institute of Hemato-Oncology provides intensive care to patients with hematologic cancer and stands out for the high-level professional qualifications of the medical staff. The head of the Institute of Hemato-Oncology is Prof. Arnon Nagler.

Prof. Nagler specializes in internal diseases, hematology, bone marrow transplantation and umbilical cord blood transplant. He obtained advanced training in hemato-oncology and bone marrow transplantation at Stanford University (Stanford, USA). He has also served as the head of the umbilical cord blood bank at Sheba Medical Center (Tel HaShomer) since 2001. Prof. Nagler is one of the world's leaders in the field of umbilical cord blood storage and processing as well as stem cells preparation.

Prof. Nagler is one of the founders of the European net of umbilical cord blood banks and organ transplantation products. The umbilical cord blood bank at Sheba Medical Center recently obtained international accreditation. Arnon Nagler won many awards in the field of hematology and organ transplant and holds more than 40 patents. He has served the head researcher for 15 clinical trials and is an internationally recognized lecturer. Prof. Nagler received more than 40 grants from the government, science foundations and pharmaceutical companies and has published hundreds of books and academic papers.

Prof. Nagler holds the title of Professor of Medicine at Tel Aviv University. Among his other duties, Prof. Nagler held the posts of Technical Director and Counselor at Hamida Biopharmaceutical Company, where he developed stem cell apheresis technology.

The department features a psychological support group to help patients overcome the effects of cumbersome and complex treatment. Volunteers work with the Institute to help Russian-speaking patients and patients with special needs.
